CASSOPOLIS — David Anthony Stockdale, 21, of 50021 Twin Lakes Road, Decatur, who punched, pummeled and pulled a knife on his 16-year-old brother, was found guilty at jury trial of domestic violence on Tuesday.

Photographic evidence at trial revealed that the youth suffered injuries to his face, back, neck and arm.

A four-man, two-woman Cass County District Court jury unanimously convicted Stockdale of domestic violence for the assault of his juvenile sibling.

Cass County Prosecutor Victor Fitz noted Wednesday, “This case was not a mere sibling squabble. It was a disturbing attack by a grown man on a teen.”

The victim testified that on Aug. 31, 2010, the defendant became enraged at him for wanting to lend some video games to their eldest brother.

The defendant quickly turned the video dispute physical.

Testimony indicated that he grabbed the 16- year-old’s leg and yanked it.

Then, towering over the seated victim, the defendant reared back and punched the teen in the jaw.

The defendant then wrestled the victim to the couch, held him there and punched him repeatedly.

The defendant finished his attack by pulling a knife and threatening to kill the victim.

The defendant also threatened to kill the police upon learning that the victim was going to call for help.

Testimony elicited by Assistant Prosecutor Melissa Sytsma established that a terrified youth grabbed his cell phone and ran out of the house without even stopping to put on his shoes.

The victim indicated from the stand that he called his eldest brother in hysterics, then called 9-1-1 immediately afterward.

The 9-1-1 recording, which was played for the jury, depicted the fearful and crying victim detailing the defendant’s attack against him.

The quick response of Cass County sheriff’s deputies Savita Purlee and Kathryn White thwarted an attempt by the defendant and his mother to leave the scene before police arrived.

Photographs taken by Deputy Purlee showed numerous injuries to the 16- year-old’s face, back, neck, and arm as a result of the defendant’s assault.

The defendant was sentenced by Judge Stacey Rentfrow to six months probation and mandatory anger management counseling.

Domestic violence is punishable by 93 days in jail and/or a $500 fine.
