Vikings hold off Clay

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Visiting Niles survived a 24-point third quarter by South Bend Clay to remain undefeated on the season with a 68-63 victory over the Colonials.

Clay (5-5) grabbed a five-point lead after one quarter, taking a 16-11 advantage into the second period.

Niles exploded for 23 points, while holding Clay to just 10 points to take a 34-26 lead at the intermission.

The Colonials came out of the locker room red-hot and poured in 24 points to knot the game at 50-50 with eight minutes remaining in the contest.

Niles was able to outscore Clay by five points (18-13) in the fourth quarter to improve to 4-0 on the season.

Vikings’ guards Matthew McLaughlin and Austin Parks did most of the damage Tuesday night against the Colonials as they combined for 34 points and 11 rebounds.

McLaughlin led the way with 18 points, five rebounds, three steals and two assists, while Parks finished with 16 points, six rebounds and three assists.

Niles leading scorer Myles Busby added 14 points and five rebounds.

Donovan Campbell led Clay and all scorers with 20 points. Taron Miller added 18 and Tony Shead 16.

The Vikings freshmen team defeated Penn Tuesday night 36-33.

Jeremy Wortham and Tate Rudlaff both scored 10 points for Niles, which also got six points from Conner Glick.

The Niles JV team was also a winner Tuesday night as it defeated South Bend Clay 56-42.

Rodney Applewhite led the Vikings with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Alec Brown finished with 10 points, while Aaron Pierce chipped in with 10 points and Anthony Bice seven rebounds.
