Penn, Jaeschke share honors

PARK RIDGE, Ill. — Karisma Penn of Illinois and Amy Jaeschke of Northwestern have been named the Big Ten Conference Co-Players of the Week.

Maggie Lucas of Penn State and Cortney Moses of Purdue shared the Freshmen of the Week honors.

Co-Player of the Week:

Karisma Penn, Illinois

6-2, So., F, Shaker Heights, Pa./Shaker Heights

Penn claims her first Big Ten Player of the Week honor of the season after recording a double-double in Illinois’ 65-56 victory over Illinois-Chicago on Saturday at the United Center. Penn finished with 16 points on 6-of-11 shooting and 10 rebounds, pitching in two steals and two assists. She also blocked seven shots, which tied an Illinois single-game record. It was Penn’s sixth double-double of the season, which is tied for the most in the Big Ten so far this year. She ranks sixth in the conference in points per game (16.4) and second in rebounds per game (9.3).

Amy Jaeschke, Northwestern

6-5, Sr., C, Wilmette, Ill./New Trier

Jaeschke earns her third Big Ten Player of the Week honor this season after averaging 24.3 points, 6.0 rebounds and 5.0 blocks per game in three Northwestern contests last week. She recorded with two 20-point games, two seven-rebound efforts and finished the week with 15 blocks. Her top game of the week came against Northern Illinois, where she finished with a game-high 33 points, adding seven rebounds and swatting five shots in a victory over the Huskies. Jaeschke ranks second in the Big Ten points per game (24.2) and third in rebounds (9.2)

Co-Freshmen of the Week:

Maggie Lucas, Penn State

5-9, G, Narberth, Pa./Germantown Academy

Lucas collects her fifth straight Big Ten Freshman of the Week award after guiding Penn State to a 64-55 win over Delaware on Sunday. The newcomer scored a team-high 16 points, 10 of which came after halftime, along with four rebounds  and two steals as Penn State won its 10th game of the season. She also nailed four three-pointers, two of which came in the final 4:09 just as the Blue Hens had cut the Penn State lead to two. Lucas ranks fourth in the Big Ten in scoring at 16.9 per game.

Courtney Moses, Purdue

5-7, G, Sweetser, Ind./Oak Hill

Moses was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week for the second time this season after logging 12 points and four assists in a team-high 35 minutes in Purdue’s 76-56 win over Auburn on Saturday at Conseco Fieldhouse. The freshman was 5-of-9 from the floor, scoring in double figures for the sixth time this season, and also adding three rebounds and two steals. Moses ranks second in scoring among all Big Ten freshman, averaging 11.7 points a contest.
