James Joseph Witkowski, 80, of 4:23 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 16, 2010 at West Woods of Niles following an extended illness.

He was born March 6, 1930 in South Bend to Joseph W. Witkowski and Theresa (Klosowski) Witkowski. He graduated from South Bend Central High School and moved to Niles 50 years ago.

James retired in 1995 after 33 years of service at Whirlpool Corp. in Benton Harbor. He was a member of St. Mark Catholic Church in Niles. He also graduated from Valparaiso Technological Institute.

He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict, having served in the United States Navy from 1951-54.

He enjoyed caring for his yard and house.

James married Joan I. (Miller) Witkowski on Oct. 20, 1951 in South Bend.

He is survived by his wife, Joan; sons, Michael J. (Bonnie) Witkowski of South Bend, Thomas J. (Janice) Witkowski of Columbus, Ind. and James J. (Cindy) Witkowski of Little Rock, Ark.; daughter, Theresa L. (Chris) Teeple of Osceola, Ind.; 11 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a brother, Clifford (Josephine) Witkowski of Mishawaka, Ind.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Kenneth Witkowski.

Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 19, 2010 at Halbritter Funeral Home in Niles with the Rev. David Otto of St. Mary Catholic Church officiating.

Friends may call one hour prior to services at the funeral home.

A flag presentation and “Taps” by the United States Navy Honor Guard will follow services at the funeral home.
