A new addition to the Niles Hunter Ice Festival will draw national attention to the area.

The Food Network will be filming two carvers from the Ice Brigade, a team of ice carvers from Grand Rapids, for a new upcoming series during the 7th annual festival to be held Jan. 14-16.

Lisa Croteau, executive director of Niles Main Street Downtown Development Authority, made the announcement to the city council Monday night.

“They will be carving an ice carousel … that people will be able to ride,” she said. “I don’t know too many details, because it’s never been done before.”

Croteau said more details about the show being taped for Food Network and about the ice carousel won’t be available until closer to the beginning of the festival.

She added the perfect weather for building an ice carousel that will last long enough for people to ride would be temperatures between 15 and 22 degrees and overcast skies.

The city council approved a resolution to give a $2,500 sponsorship for publicity and promotion of the festival Monday night.
