A Howard Township home was destroyed by fire Tuesday after firefighters battled the blaze for more than nine hours overnight. No one was injured.

According to Howard Township Fire Chief Ed Leneway, a fire was reported at about 11 p.m. at a two-story home owned by Mark Price on Kathryn Street, a dead-end road. Mark and his wife were home at the time, Leneway said.

Niles Fire Chief Larry Lamb said when his department arrived on the scene, the home was engulfed in flames 30 feet high. He said a 20-miles-per-hour wind was pushing the fire into the attic.

The last fire truck left the scene at about 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, Leneway said.

“It was pretty windy,” he said. “They had a good-sized home and there were some pretty slippery roads.”

No other buildings were damaged by the fire. Farm animals on the property were not harmed, Leneway said. He does not know where the Prices are being housed.

Also responding with mutual aid were the Niles Township Fire Department; the Edwardsburg and Pokagon fire departments with tankers; Bertrand Township Fire Department; Clay Township Fire Department; the Cass County Sheriff’s Department; and the Southwestern Michigan Community Ambulance Service.

The state fire marshal is scheduled to begin an investigation, Leneway said.

“We’ll probably know more today,” he said.

The Niles Fire Department had a busy night, Lamb said. His department also responded at about 8 p.m. Tuesday to a fire involving a laser device at Modineer in Niles.
