CASSOPOLIS — Two Indiana residents, who had pleaded guilty to home invasion in Niles Township, got lenient sentencings at Cass County Circuit Court Friday.

Richard Coughenhour, 31, of Elkhart and Jamie Goodwin, 24, of Nappanee, both gave testimony at the trial for the main perpetrator, Todd Baker, which led to his conviction. Their cooperation earned a positive recommendation from Assistant Chief Prosecutor Frank Machnik.

Coughenhour, who has two previous trips to prison on his record and committed the offense while on parole, received a sentence of two to 22.5 years in prison with credit for 176 days served.

Goodwin, who had a clean record before the offense, was given a two-year probation sentence and a 180-day jail sentence, which was suspended provided she comply with terms of her probation.

The crime took place on June 11 when Goodwin drove Baker and Coughenhour to a home on Bertrand Road in Niles Township.

Baker broke into the home and signaled Coughenhour to join him, according to Judge Michael Dodge. When the homeowner arrived, Goodwin left the scene in her vehicle.

All three were later found and arrested. A pillow case full of possessions from the home was found by the door.

Coughenhour was remorseful in his statement to the court.

“I’d like to apologize to the victim and family,” he said. “I can only imagine how I would feel if this happened to me and my family.”

Goodwin, who has recently found employment and undergone counseling, was apologetic as well.

Her attorney Carol Bealor said she is proud of her client.

“She took responsibility for her poor choices. This is the last time you’ll see her,” Bealor said.
