NOTRE DAME, Ind. — The first round of “Shots from the Heart” has been completed and released, and, Irish head coach Mike Brey has advanced to the second round.

Brey, who shot his free throws this past Monday, defeated John Giannini of LaSalle and will now face Ed Conroy of Tulane in the next round.

Brey finished with a total of 27 points and missed just three total free throws out of 25. Brey missed his fifth, 19th and 22nd free throws.  Giannini finished with 20 points and missed eight total free throws. He was unsuccessful on his second, sixth, 11th, 14th, 18th, 20th, 22nd and 25th attempts.

Assistant coach Martin Ingelsby, who participated in the assistant coaches’ tournament, did not advance, despite that fact that he tallied an impressive score of 28 points and missed just three free throws.  Ingelsby missed on attempts number nine, 16th and 18th.

Ingelsby was up against Dan Englestad of Holy Cross who finished with a total of 30 points while missing just one free throw (his 19th).

The second round must be completed by the end of December.  The date for Brey to shoot his second-round free throws has not been set and will be announced at a later date.

“Shots from the Heart” is a season-long free throw contest, sponsored by collegeinsider.com, featuring basketball coaches from across the country who are participating in the event with the goal of creating an understanding and awareness for the fight against heart disease and to raise money for the benefit of the American Heart Association.
