People can recover from Thanksgiving and Black Friday on Saturday with the annual Holiday Homecoming celebration downtown.

The festivities begin at 4 p.m. and will include carriage rides, Christmas caroling from the Niles High School drama club and a visit from Santa.

The lighting ceremony will take place at dusk.

“It’s just a wonderful time,” Lisa Croteau, director of Niles Main Street said. “It’s a relaxing kickoff to the holiday season. All the shops are decorated and you can go from shop to shop and work on that wish list.”

The event, which has been taking place annually since 2004, has always drawn a good crowd, according to Croteau.

And this year the event lands on “Small Business Saturday,” and Croteau hopes people will support the downtown businesses.

“When you make a conscious choice to support your neighborhood small businesses, the money you spend helps build strong businesses that then have the resources to give back and support community events and activities,” she said. “By supporting your local businesses you are fostering the growth of a strong community.”

Niles isn’t the only community with holiday celebrations Saturday. Edwardsburg’s Community Christmas Tree Lighting is on tap for 5 p.m. with ornament decorating, holiday music, cookies and hot cocoa. Downtown Buchanan will kick off the holidays with “White Saturday” on Saturday as well.
