DOWAGIAC — Two people were injured in a pickup-tractor accident Tuesday in Wayne Township, Cass County.

Sheriff Joseph Underwood Jr. reports that  at 10:35 a.m., his office was called to investigate a personal injury crash on Gage Street near the intersection of Atwood Road in Wayne Township.

Jessica Karnes, 20, of Dowagiac, was eastbound on Gage Street when she became distracted and struck an eastbound slow-moving tractor operated by Alfredo Martinez, 25, of Decatur.

Martinez was ejected off the tractor from the force of the crash onto the roadway. Coloma ambulance service treated and transported both individuals from the scene to Borgess Hospital in Dowagiac for treatment.

Assisting in this crash were Coloma Emergency Medical Services and Wayne Township Fire Department.

Alcohol is not believed to be a factor and seat belts were used in the pickup. The tractor was not equipped with seat belts, roll cage or cab.

This case remains under investigation.
