Esther L. Brooks, 83, of Osceola, Ind. and formerly of Niles, died at 7:12 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 16, 2010 at Morningside Nursing and Memory Center in South Bend of an extended illness.

She was born Jan. 29, 1927 in Kendallville, Ind. to Ivory J. Olinghouse and Grace O. (Marti) Olinghouse. She moved from Niles to Osceola 14 years ago. She enjoyed crocheting special items for her family.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Brooks; her sons, Royle Weisher, who died in 1983, and John W. “Johnny” Weisher, who died Aug. 18, 2009; a sister, Margaret Cribbs; and a twin sister, Phyllis Randoll.
She is survived by a daughter, Julia Upchurch of Osceola; grandchildren, Suzette R. (and Steve) Messenger of White Pigeon, Brian D. (Kelly) Fisher of Niles, Wednesday McLalin of Niles; six great-grandchildren; a brother, Charles Olinghouse of Niles; sisters, Ruth Howk of Mishawaka, Ind., Pat Messner of Harrisonburg, Va. and Katie Smith of Jeffersonville, Ind.; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will gather privately for services at a later date with Pastor Dale A. Moore of Open Bible Baptist Church of Elkhart, Ind. officiating.
Burial will take place at Mission Hills Memorial Gardens in Niles.
Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 23, 2010 at Halbritter Funeral Home in Niles.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
