JONESVILLE — The tournament run of the Brandywine volleyball team ended in the quarterfinal round as Monroe St. Mary Catholic Central swept the Bobcats 3-0 Tuesday night.

The Kestrels (37-14-2) used the powerful hitting of Sarah Brent, solid defense and strong serving to post a 25-12, 25-16 and 25-17 victory over the Bobcats.

Brent set the tone early with six kills in the opening set and finished the night with 14 kills.

But she wasn’t the only one hurting the Bobcats with her offense. McKenzie Todd added seven kills, while Sydney Maddux and Megan Satterfield also contributed to the sweep.

“Well, actually we have been spreading our offense around a little bit more and our other people were a little bit sluggish so she stepped up, but she is probably our go-to person,” St. Mary coach Diane Tuller said.

Brandywine (42-9-4) played well to a point in all three sets. The Bobcats were down 11-10 in the first set, 9-7 in the second set and were tied at 10-10 in the final set.

On all three occasions, St. Mary Catholic Central went on a run, usually spurred by a big kill from Brent.

Up just a point in the first set following a kill by Lauren Leonard, back-to-back kills from Brent turned a one-point advantage into a 14-10 lead. Another kill by Satterfield made it 17-11, while a block by Taylor Vulch and Michelle DeMarco kept the run going.

DeMarco sandwiched a kill by Brent with two of her own to increase the Kestrels’ advantage to 23-12. A hitting error by Brandywine gave SMCC set point, and a serving error gave the first set to St. Mary.

Brandywine’s Jessy Cooper staked the Bobcats to a 1-0 advantage in the second set, but a pair of hitting errors and a pair of kills from Brent gave the Kestrels a 4-2 advantage.

The St. Mary lead reached 6-3 following a kill by Todd, but the Bobcats came storming back and cut the lead to 7-5 on an ace by Ashley DeJonge. A follow-up kill by Kelsey Prestly made it 7-6.

Another serving error increased the Kestrels’ lead to two, but kills by Prestley and Mackenzie Shelton kept Brandywine within a point. But following Leonard’s kill to make it 10-9, a hitting error seemed to spark SMCC.

An 11-9 lead quickly turned into a 16-11 set as Brent and Satterfield recorded kills and Bailey Windham’s ace turned the match in favor of St. Mary.

From there it only got worse for the Bobcats. A block by Vulch, two kills by Todd and an ace by DeMarco pulled the Kestrels within two points of victory. Following a kill by Morgan Smallwood to stave off the win, Satterfield drove home a spike to give St. Mary a 2-0 advantage.

Four straight service winners from Windham, including an ace, and two kills from Brent gave the Kestrels a 5-1 advantage to start the third and final set.

Brandywine battled back after being down 7-3 and finally caught St. Mary at 10-10 on a block by Leonard.

However, two more hitting errors by the Bobcats gave the lead back to SMCC and it wasn’t about to let Brandywine get back in the match.

A trio of kills by Todd helped the Kestrels open up a 22-16 advantage, while kills from Maddux and Satterfield set up the match-winning point.

“Our blocking wasn’t on tonight. Our serve receive wasn’t on tonight. Our hitting wasn’t on tonight,” Brandywine coach Nikki Bush said.

Prestly and Leonard both finished with seven kills, while Prestly added six digs. Cooper finished with 16 assists.

St. Mary advances to Thursday’s semifinals at the Battle Creek Kellogg Arena at 2 p.m. The Kestrels will play Reese, which defeated Riverview Gabriel Richard 25-22, 25-18 and 25-18 in the other quarterfinal match. The winner advances to Saturday’s championship game at noon.
