If you were unable to attend the Buchanan Library’s third annual “Halloween Party” this past weekend, you surely missed a great event.

This family fun event took place Thursday, Oct. 28 and was a safe venue for kids preschool through fifth grade. Dressed to impress in their scariest, funniest and most creative attire, children and parents indulged in an abundance of food, games and prizes.

This year the Halloween party was pirate themed and featured such activities as “Catacomb of the Deep,” a pirate ship maze and a make-your-own Halloween treat. With the help of some local volunteers, artists and students who graciously dedicated their free time to painting and decorating, the pirate ship maze was a huge success, as was the party.

During this weekend, the Buchanan District Library also hosted two other events.

“Grave Matters” on Saturday, Oct. 30, was a history of graveyards, cemeteries, markers, monuments and mausoleums presented by Bob Meyers from the Berrien County Historical Society, which examined the history of the park cemetery movement that transformed the church graveyard to a park setting where Victorian Americans strolled in quiet contemplation and even enjoyed picnic dinners.

Photographs of local cemeteries were also provided.

Later that same day the Ghostly Pirate Crew of the Buchanan District Library hosted their first Pirate Walk through downtown Buchanan.

This event was for teens between the ages of 12 and 18 who dressed in pirate costumes and walked the streets of Buchanan, collecting non-perishable food items that would benefit RAM-love Inc. in Buchanan.

This was a safe way for young adults to celebrate the spirit of Halloween, giving back to the community and connecting with the library.
