Volleyball districts get under way tonight

The post season for some of the area volleyball teams gets under way tonight.

Dowagiac and Niles are both hosting Class B and Class A events. The Dowagiac district begins today at 5 p.m., while the Niles district will open up action on Tuesday.

Class A

Niles will host Benton Harbor on Tuesday at 6 p.m., while two other matches will be held at Kalamazoo Central and Kalamazoo Loy Norrix.

New this year, districts that have seven or eight teams do not have to all games played at the host site.

With this in mind, Kalamazoo Central will host Portage Central, while Loy Norrix will host Mattawan.

On Thursday night, Portage Northern will take on the winner of the Vikings-Tigers match at Nile High School beginning at 6 p.m.

The winners from the Kalamazoo Central-Portage Central and Loy Norrix-Mattawan matches will play at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday. The finals will be held on Saturday. A time has yet to be determined.

Tickets are $5 per person and no passes will be accepted.

Class B

Edwardsburg and Buchanan will open up the district tournament at 5 p.m. at Dowagiac with the host Chieftains facing Berrien Springs in the second match at 7 p.m.

Lakeshore and St. Joseph both earned first round byes and will play in the semifinals Nov. 2.

St. Joseph will take on the winner of the Dowagiac-Berrien Springs match at 5 p.m., while Lakeshore gets the winner of the Edwardsburg-Buchanan match at 7 p.m.

The championship match is set for Thursday, Nov. 4 at 7 p.m.

The winner advances to the Three Rivers regional Nov. 9-11.
