HOLLAND — Drew Lockwood scored three goals and had an assist as No. 1 Grand Rapids South Christian defeated Dowagiac in the Division 3 Regional Soccer semifinals 7-0 Wednesday afternoon at Hope College.

Lockwood scored all three of his goals in the first half and assisted on the final score of the opening 40 minutes as the Sailors built a 5-0 advantage at halftime.

Lockwood scored in the eighth, 21st and 26th minutes for South Christian, which scored a pair of goals in the final minute to blow the match open.

Dan Miedema made it 4-0 in the 40th minute and then Sean Broekhuizen completed the scoring with just 29 seconds remaining in the half. Lockwood had the assist on the final goal.

South Christian, which now has 19 shutouts on the season and hasn’t lost a match since August, outshot the Chieftains (11-7) 10-1 in the first half.

In the final 40 minutes, Nate DeHaan made it a 6-0 match in the 45th minute and then Blake DeVries scored in the 61st minute to complete the scoring.

South Christian had several quality scoring chances in the final 20 minutes, but could not end the match early with the mercy rule thanks to some solid work in goal by Jason Turner. Turner finished the match with 10 saves.

“Jason played out of his head,” Dowagiac coach Mike Williams said.

Dowagiac, despite being down big, continued to play hard and had a couple of nice runs that resulted in shots on goal.

“I was happy with the way we played,” Williams said. “We marked the right people, but there are so many of them. But you can’t mark the whole team with freshmen and sophomores. There are just so many of them. I thought our effort was good for a full 80 minutes.”

The Sailors ended up with a 17-3 advantage in shots on goal and advances to the regional finals on Friday at 7 p.m. against the winner of the Galesburg-August and Belding winner at Hope College.

“It’s been a good season. An 11-7 record against the competition we play is pretty good,” Williams said.
