Vandalia man pleads to 10 counts

CASSOPOLIS — Cass County Prosecutor Victor Fitz reported Tuesday that Vernon Redmond, a man found in September 2010 to be in possession of more than 140 grams of cocaine and a stolen firearm, has pleaded guilty to all primary criminal offenses pending against him.
Fitz advised that 140 grams of cocaine has a potential street value near $30,000.
Redmond, 40, had been arrested by the Cass County Drug Enforcement Team (CCDET) Sept. 22 after officers found him in possession of cocaine, marijuana and a stolen firearm during a search at his 60637 Water St., Vandalia, home.
On Monday, Oct. 25, Redmond pleaded guilty to 10 offenses and to being a second drug offender and a third habitual offender.
The 10 charges and their maximum enhanced penalties are:
• Possession with intent to deliver 50-449 grams of cocaine (40 years maximum, discretionarily consecutive).
• Receiving and concealing a stolen firearm (20 years maximum; concurrent).
• Possession of a firearm by a felon (10 years maximum; concurrent).
• Altering a firearm’s identification marks (four years maximum; concurrent).
• Maintaining a drug house (four years maximum; concurrent).
• Possession of marijuana (two years maximum; concurrent).
• Four counts felony firearm (two years maximum, each concurrent to each other, mandatorily consecutive to other felonies).
The prosecutor’s office also advises it will administratively dismiss several lesser included charges.
Defendants in Michigan cannot be convicted of both the primary charge and a lesser included charge.
Circuit Judge Michael E. Dodge accepted the pleas and will preside over sentencing Dec. 3 at 8:30 a.m.
