Let us go to the father’s house

Jesus talked about his father’s house. He said, in the gospel of John 14:2, “In my Father’s house are many rooms.” Jesus said He was going there.

Jesus was talking to his followers and explaining what was going to happen. They were in Jerusalem. The time of the crucifixion of Jesus was drawing near. Jesus had told them He was going to die and be raised from the dead (Matthew 16:21). These facts were very troubling to the disciples, and Jesus was comforting them by telling them about the future.

Jesus said He was going to His Father’s house to prepare a place for them (John 14:2). This preparation is personal. It is the host getting everything ready, making it comfortable, personalizing some things, and giving it that extra touch.

Jesus was talking to his closest followers, but every person who has put their faith in the finished work of Jesus Christ on the cross is included. The father’s house is big and has many rooms, according to Jesus (John 14:2).

Jesus was going to the father’s house after he died. We, that is, all believers in Jesus Christ, will go there when we die. It is a special place.

There will be a great meal there. It is called the “wedding supper of the Lamb” (Revelation 19:9). We will all sit down to eat this great meal. God the father will be there, Jesus Christ the son will be there, and every believer in Christ from every corner of the Earth from every time period will be there to share in this grand occasion.

It is a wedding supper because it is a marriage. Jesus Christ is the groom and believers in Christ are the bride. The wedding supper is the great celebration of the uniting of the bride and the groom in the Father’s house.

As Jesus talked about his father’s house and his going there to make preparation, He promised, in John 14:3, that “if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.” Jesus continued, “You know the way.”

One of the followers of Christ, Thomas, asked the obvious question in verse 5. He said, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?”

Jesus answered Thomas’ question without rebuke and stated what has become the very essence of the gospel and the way to Heaven (i.e. the father’s house). Jesus said, in verse 6, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

So, are you going to the father’s house? It is in Heaven and the invitation is clear. The criterion for admission is also clear. It is only through Jesus Christ the only begotten Son of the Living God.

 Let’s get ready to go!
