The Vikings versus the Spartans. It sounds like a hypothetical show you might see on The History Channel.

One of those battles that most historians would give the edge to the Spartans because of their discipline, superior training and battle tactics as compared to the ferociousness and bravery of the Vikings.

On Monday night, the Vikings reigned supreme as the Niles girls varsity volleyball team beat the visiting Spartans of Battle Creek Lakeview in dominating fashion by the count of 3-1.

Niles, despite missing one their leading setters Taylor Brandstatter (flu) and head coach Linda Martin (illness) played very well together and had great chemistry all night.

“The girls did a nice job of stepping up to the plate tonight, and they demonstrated a lot of leadership, and they are a well coached team, and it really showed tonight when their coach wasn’t here,” said Alyse Hoyt, the JV coach that sat in for coach Martin tonight. “Their chemistry is really jelling, and I am excited to see what they are going to do at the districts,” she continued.

The Vikings won the first game by the score of 25-20 before dropping the second game by nearly the same score, 25-18.

The last two games were all Vikings as they won 25-19 and 25-14.

The Vikings will play next on Wednesday in another SMAC crossover game as they travel to Kalamazoo Loy Norrix.

Hoyt and her JV squad will host the SMAC conference tournament this Saturday.
