Martin Henry Wagner, 93, of Buchanan, passed away at his home Monday, Oct. 18, 2010 of natural causes.

He was born Jan. 24, 1917 in St. Joseph to the late Fred and Anna (Trinke) Wagner.

After high school Martin joined the Conservation Civil Corps (CCC), where he traveled throughout Michigan above the 36th parallel, planting pine trees.

On May 29, 1943 Martin married Ethel June Nightlinger at a ceremony on her father’s farm in Sodus, Mich.

Martin retired from Whirlpool Corp. after 32 years of dedicated service. He was a lifelong member of First United Methodist Church in Buchanan. Martin enjoyed spending time outdoors including scouting, camping, feeding the birds and squirrels and picking fruits and vegetables. Martin and Ethel enjoyed traveling with the Good Sams Club for many years. The couple also spent a lot of time at Sandy Pines Campground in Allegan, Mich., where they were members for more than 30 years. Martin loved spending time with his grandchildren and family. He also loved the thrill of scratching lottery tickets.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Ethel Wagner; a son, John Wagner; a brother, Ed Wagner; and a sister, Ida Kettlehut.

Martin is survived by three sons, Jim (Bonnie) Wagner of Brunswick, Ga., Jack (Sharon) Wagner of South Bend, Ind. and Jerry (Pat) Wagner of Buchanan; 10 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Daisy Curtis of Scottdale, Mich.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, Oct. 23, 2010 at 10 a.m. at Mission Hills Memorial Chapel, 61543 M-51 in Niles with Pastor Rob McPherson officiating.

An interment will follow at Mission Hills Memorial Gardens.
