Gantt eighth at Wolverine meet

VICKSBURG — The Dowagiac cross country team didn’t really have a dog in the fight when it came to winning the Wolverine Conference Cross Country Championships Tuesday afternoon at Vicksburg, but the Chieftains did have a vested interest in one of the races.

Dowagiac’s Chris Gantt earned All-Conference honors with his eighth place overall finish at the meet.

Gull Lake was the boys’ overall champion, while Otsego grabbed the girls’ crown.

The Blue Devils finished with 49 points to edge runner-up Otsego, which had 54 points. Vicksburg finished third with 75 points, while Plainwell and Paw Paw rounded out the top five with 131 and 137 respectively.

Dowagiac finished 10th with 243 points.

Tim Simon of Gull Lake was the individual champion after running a time of 16:23, which was three seconds faster than second place Brian Harvey of Otsego, who ran a 16:26.

Gantt posted a time of 16:55.4 to nip Luke Boulter of Plainwell for the eighth spot. Boulter ran a time of 16:55.7.

Plainwell’s Mackenzie Evers was the girls’ individual champion with a time of 18:33, which was almost a full minute faster than runner-up Taylor Smith of Otsego, who was clocked at 19:10. Morgan Stuut of Three Rivers finished third with a 19:24.
