CASSOPOLIS — An open invitation is extended by the Minority Coalition of Cass County to celebrate the unveiling of the Sanctuary and Deliverance Kentucky Raid Mural.
The unveiling will take place on site at 150 S. Broadway in Cassopolis on Saturday, Oct. 23, at 10 a.m.
Deanda Johnson, regional coordinator for the National Underground Railroad Network for the National Park Service, will be the keynote speaker.
Music will be provided by the Cassopolis High School African American Club and the Kentucky at Sunrise Community Choir. The outdoor mural represents the triumph of 12 African Americans from Kenton and Boone Counties who freed themselves from the Kentucky farmers who held them in slavery. These freedom-seekers did what most enslaved African Americans had to do to break the chains of slavery — they took the first steps to freedom by themselves because there was no Underground Railroad on southern soil. The 60-foot outdoor mural was designed by Cassopolis resident and Minority Coalition member Ruth Andrews.
