From staff reports

The Dowagiac freshmen football team defeated host Gull Lake last Thursday night 62-22.

Shane Bevins had 172 yards and three touchdowns on 11 carries as the Chieftains rolled up 451 yards in total offense.

Lucas Petro had 72 yards and three touchdowns on just five carries, while Austin Broda scored twice and Aaron Adams also found the end zone.

Bevins was also the leading tackler for Dowagiac. Brody Froehlich had three sacks.

“Gull Lake came out ready to play,” Dowagiac coach Tony Scaccia said. “They took a 14-7 lead into the second quarter. Our kids never waivered and we really hit our stride offensively in the second half. I am really proud of this effort.”

The Dowagiac JV football team was not as fortunate as it was defeated by the Blue Devils 46-21.

“After scoring on the first play of the game we hurt ourselvs with mental mistakes and playing flat,” Dowagiac coach Matt Alward said. “We need to regroup and get ready for next week.”

Taylor Panczak scored on a quarterback throwback for the Chieftains and threw a touchdown pass to Brendon Murray. Anteyon Russell had the other touchdown for Dowagiac.

The Chieftains entertain Otsego Thursday at Chris Taylor-Alumni Field. The freshmen game is slated for 4:30 p.m. and the JV contest for 6:15.
