A Buchanan cab driver and two Niles women were injured in a two-vehicle crash at South 11th Street and Stateline Road Monday night.
The Berrien County Niles Township patrol responded at about 7:59 p.m. to a priority call of an injury accident with possible entrapment at the intersection. Agencies from both Michigan and Indiana responded to the scene and found two vehicles involved in the accident which were blocking the northbound lanes of South 11th Street just north of Stateline Road.
Philip Hempel, 62, of Buchanan, was driving a 1996 Volvo for a local cab company and was traveling northbound on South 11th street entering Michigan when a 1996 Chevy Cavalier driven by Justine Nsumba, 21, of Niles, attempted to make a left hand turn onto Stateline Road and turned in front of Hempel’s vehicle.
Hempel was unable to avoid the collision and crashed into the front passenger side of Nsumba’s vehicle.
Nsumba had a front seat passenger, Dashonda Anderson, 18, of Niles, who along with Hempel and Nsumba was injured as a result of the crash.
Hempel and Anderson were transported by Southwestern Michigan Community Ambulance Service to Memorial Hospital in South Bend. Clay Township Fire/Ambulance assisted by transporting Nsumba to Memorial Hospital. The Berrien County Sheriff Department Accident Reconstruction Team responded to assist with the collision. Also assisting with traffic control were the Michigan State Police, Indiana State Police, St. Joseph County Sheriff Office, Niles Township Fire Department and the Berrien County South County Road Patrol.
Nsumba was issued a citation for “fail to yield” to oncoming traffic.
This accident remains under investigation by the Berrien County Accident Reconstruction Team.
