LANSING — For the second year in a row, Cass County Prosecutor Victor Fitz has been appointed by the Prosecuting Attorneys Association of Michigan (PAAM) to chair its Corrections Policy Committee.
His term will run through August 2011.
Ionia County Prosecutor and current PAAM President Ron Schafer stated, “During the past year Fitz and the Corrections Committee have been in the thick of the fight to preserve truth in sentencing for the citizens of Michigan.
“This is a critical and continuing battle. Truth in sentencing provides protection and certainty for victims. A small but vocal group has been clamoring for the repeal of this important law.
“Having an experienced prosecutor such as Victor Fitz as chair of the Corrections Committee will help insure that truth in sentencing remains the law in Michigan.”
Fitz has also served on the PAAM Board of Directors since January 2007.
His fellow Michigan prosecutors voted unanimously to renew his position on the board at their August summer meeting.
Fitz said Tuesday, “I greatly appreciate the opportunity to continue service with PAAM and my fellow Michigan prosecutors.
“We are unified in the desire to protect our communities from crime and to fight the unnecessary release of dangerous criminals upon our streets.”
Fitz has served his entire 27-year career in the field of prosecution.
PAAM was established in 1929.
It is a voluntary association of all 83 of the state’s prosecuting attorneys, the attorney general and U.S. Attorneys serving in Michigan.
Its primary purposes are to promote fair, swift and equal justice in enforcing the state’s criminal laws and the continuing education of prosecuting attorneys and other law enforcement officials.
