Christianity does not exempt one from death; it only insures triumph over death.

Many years of a useful lift was ended Monday, Sept. 27, 2010, when Mrs. Elizabeth J. Thompson, known to most as Mrs. “T,” was called from this earthly scene.  It is God’s will that the laborers shall sleep.

Mrs. Elizabeth J. Thompson was born Oct. 20, 1914, in Louisville, Ky. She was an only child/daughter of Carrie E. Blakey.

Mrs. “T” was converted and baptized at an early age in Louisville.

In 1942, she moved to Chicago, Ill., and became a member of Wayman A.M.E. Church.

She received her education with honors in Louisville and Chicago.

Also, she took many classes in management through Chicago Police Department, where she worked as clerk for seven years.

She volunteered 15 years of service with the Girl/Boy Scouts of America, receiving many honors and awards.

She married the late Robert L. Thompson on May 10, 1943, in Gadsden, Ala.

After Mr. Thompson received his honorable discharge from World War II, they returned to Chicago.

In 1962, she became a member of Holy Family Lutheran Church in Chicago.

During her life in Chicago, she managed and owned a dress-making business.

She and her husband owned and managed the Thompson Insurance Agency and exclusive dry cleaning and alteration shop.

She was the founder of the Robert L. Thompson Scholarship Fund, awarding 55 girls scholarships to school of their choice, presented annually at their debutante ball.

In 1975, Mrs. “T” and her husband, Rep. Robert T. Thompson, retired from the Illinois Legislature.

They moved to Cassopolis, where they united with St. Paul Lutheran Church.

After 40 years, eight happy years working together in Christian, civic and political life, she and her husband co-authored “The family history of the Robert L. Thompson Family Life.”

Her husband and mother preceded her in death.

She will be missed. She leaves to mourn her passing many cousins, nieces, nephews and a host of friends.

A special “THANK YOU” to Georgia Boggs and to each of you for your many acts of kindness during this time of sorrow.

Funeral services will be Friday, Oct. 1, at 11 a.m. at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, South Bend, Ind., with visitation one hour before services at the church.

Burial will take place at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Osceola, Ind.

Hoven Funeral Home, Buchanan, is handling arrangements for the family.
