Dowagiac’s Chris Gantt grabbed a second place finish on Tuesday, but the Chieftains couldn’t keep visiting Plainwell from getting a sweep at the Wolverine cross country meet held at the Dowagiac Middle School.

Luke Boulter was the overall boys’ winner as he ran a time of 17:11 to lead the Trojans to a 19-43 victory over the Chieftains.

Plainwell would claim eight of the top 10 spots in the race to earn the victory.

Dowagiac’s Chris Craft finished eighth with a time of 21:10.

The Chieftains earned four of the top 12 spots, but it wasn’t enough.

“It was a little slower than he usually runs here, so I am sure he’s disappointed, but it was a good run for him,” Dowagiac coach Ken Jordan said of Gantt’s effort. “Chris Craft ran pretty well.

“Plainwell has one of the better programs. They will be one of the better teams in the conference by the end  of the year,” he added.”

Tyler Cross finished 11th, Jason Turner 12th and Julian Marshall 14.

Other Dowagiac finishers were Henry Newman (15), Austin Jackson (18), Shane Filley (19), Christian Hess (20) and Austin Francois (21).

Makenzie Evers, a freshman, didn’t have any competition as the Trojans swept the Chieftains 15-50.

Evers ran a 19:24 as Plainwell picked up the top 10 places before Dowagiac’s Hannah McDonald broke that string with an 11th place finish and a time of 25:20.

Amanda Hassle placed 14th, Kelsey Cleveland 15th, Kendra Wilson 17th and Holly Luth 19th.

Other finishers for the Chieftains were Sammy Mathews (20), Kristina Bunn (21), Kayla Yakim (22), Sarah Long (28), Rebecca Luth (29), Paige Schaus (30), Charity Evans (32), Corinne Kasper (33), Allison Hassle (34), Erin Stanton (35), Jenna File (36) and Morgan Helmuth (37).

“On the girls side, they keep running little better times,” Jordan said. “Plainwell has a superstar freshman girl that’s the best around. We had some season-best times and we keep getting better.”
