NOTRE DAME, Ind. -The legend of the shoelaces is growing.
Michigan quarterback Denard Robinson, famous for not lacing up his shoes, did it all for Michigan on Saturday afternoon as he led the Wolverines to a come-from-behind 28-24 victory.
Robinson accounted for 502 of Michigan’s 532 yards of offense.
* You have to know something was up when the sun broke out and a rainbow appeared to run from one end of the stadium to the other.
*The Fighting Irish respond with a 95-yard touchdown pass from Dayne Crist to Kyle Rudolph. That pass play was the second longest in Notre Dame history.
* With the Irish seizing a 24-21 lead with 3:41 to play, Michigan will have to look back at a pair of missed field goals that would have given them a 10-point lead and forced Notre Dame to score twice.
* No one in Notre Dame Stadium thought the game was over with Robinson on the field and with the ball in his hands. But instead of running with the ball, the quarterback who they said could not throw the football last year, he started driving the Wolverines down the field in the closing minutes.
* Robinson became the ninth quarterback in NCAA history to run and pass for 200 yards.
* His 1-yard run with 1:34 to play may have been the biggest as it kept the Wolverines drive alive at the Notre Dame 34-yard line.
* Robinson then caps the go-ahead drive with a 2-yard touchdown run that puts the Wolverines back in front 28-24 with 27 ticks remaining in regulation.
* With one last gasp, Crist’ pass sails out of the back of the end zone just as Nate Montana’s did at the end of the first half.
* The happiest player on the field as that pass flew out of bounds was Michigan kicker Brendan Gibbons, who missed two field goals that could have sealed the victory for the Wolverines in the second half.
