Cass rolls past second straight opponent

Marcus Ruff ran for 92 yards and four touchdowns as the Cassopolis Rangers improved to 2-0 with a 55-6 victory over visiting River Valley on Thursday (Sept. 2) night.

After the two teams were deadlocked at 6-6 heading into the second quarter, the Rangers took control of the game by scoring 21 points and opening up a 33-6 halftime advantage.

Cassopolis scored a pair of touchdowns in each of the final two quarters to turn the game into a rout.

Ruff opened the scoring with a 14-yard run in the first quarter.

After the Mustangs had knotted the score at 6-6, Jaylin Lawson, Nathan Hartline and Ruff all scored in the pivotal second quarter.

Lawson broke the tie with a 7-yard run, while Hartline hauled in the night’s only touchdown pass as he scooted 78 yards to the end zone on the strike from Dwayne Morgan.

Ruff then scored on 17-yard run to give the Rangers a 27-point halftime lead.

Things didn’t get any better for River Valley in the second half.

Just as he did in the first half, Ruff found the end zone first for the Rangers in the third quarter.

His back-to-back touchdown runs of 17 and 18 yards extended the Cassopolis advantage to 41-6 heading to the final quarter.

In the fourth, Evan Brown scored on a 53-yard jaunt, while Lawson capped the scoring with an 18-yard touchdown.

The Rangers finished the night with 291 yards rushing, while Morgan was 3-of-5 for 123 yards and two interceptions.

Ruff’s 92 yards came on seven carries. Brown added 62 yards on four carries, while Hartline finished with 56 yards.

River Valley finished with 124 yards rushing and 45 yards passing.

The Rangers will hit the road for the first time in 2010 as it travels to Centreville Friday night.
