Commentary: Perfection means nothing as season heats up

Another week of perfection has me standing at 10-0 after the opening two dates of the football season.

What does that mean?

Nothing of course as the season is only a third of the way to completion already.

The games won’t get any easier as our local teams are soon to begin division and conference play, which is always dicey at best.

But for some, there is one more week to tune up, while for others, they are starting to get into the meat of their schedules.

Dowagiac at Vicksburg

The Chieftains are on a major roll heading into one of  the key games of the season.

Vicksburg is believed to be by many the second best team in the Wolverine Conference behind the Chieftains.

Dowagiac has blown out its first two opponents, but this could be the best test to see just how good the Chieftains are.

Dowagiac has used a powerful running game and mixed in some passing to show better balance than a season ago.

I think the Chieftains remain undefeated after this one as well, topping the Bulldogs 35-14.

St. Joseph at Niles

The Vikings are off to its best start since 2003 when Niles recorded its last winning season and qualified for the playoffs.

The St. Joe Bears are headed to town tonight, which could put the winning streak in jeopardy.

The two teams have one common opponent already this season — Marshall.

Niles defeated the Redhawks by 29 points last week, while the Bears won by 30 on opening night.

This game will be much closer than anyone anticipates, but I have to give the nod to the Bears, 21-14.

Brandywine at Bridgman

It’s been 12 years since the Bobcats started a season 2-0.

That year  Brandywine began the season by winning its first three games.

The Bobcats will duplicate that feat tonight against a winless Bridgman team.

Brandywine coach Mike Nate is making a homecoming of sorts as his first head coaching job was at Bridgman.

The view from the visitor’s side of the field will be just fine for Nate and the Bobcats as they roll to a 42-7 win over the Bees.

Cassopolis at Centreville

The Rangers are off to another great start, but don’t expect first-year coach Bernard Thomas to let up on his team.

There is still work to do for the Rangers if they want to reach the playoffs for a fifth straight season.

Centreville was defeated by Brandywine 27-14 last week and they won’t fare any better against this Lakeland Conference squad.

The Rangers roll to 3-0 with a 56-7 win over the Bulldogs.

Bronson at Edwardsburg

The Eddies are 2-0 for the first time since 1988 and are coming off a shutout of White Pigeon last week.

Bronson will present a problem in that they run the spread offense, but I don’t expect the Eddies to have trouble adjusting.

I would like to say that another shutout is in the making, but Edwardsburg will move to 3-0 without any trouble.

Buchanan put a hurt on the Vikings in the season opener to the tune of 35-0.

The Eddies will give up a touchdown, but win 35-7.
