MARCELLUS — Lloyd Gordon Foncannon, 95, of 12700 Dutch Settlement St., Marcellus, passed away Friday evening, Sept. 3, 2010, in Bronson Methodist Hospital, Kalamazoo, following an illness.
He was born Dec. 26, 1914, in Marcellus, son of C. Frank and Gladys (Shoenight) Foncannon.
On Sept. 30, 1938, in Grand Haven, he married Ruth E. Gillard, who preceded him in death Feb. 14, 2004.
He graduated from Marcellus High School in 1932 and from Western Teachers College in Kalamazoo and received his master’s degree from Wayne State University.
During World War II he served with the U.S. Navy as a communications officer on the U.S.S. Cleveland in the South Pacific.
He taught history, geography and social studies in Detroit, Lawton and Dowagiac.
As a horticulturist, he raised Christmas trees and Carpathian walnuts.
He enjoyed photography, sculpting and painting.
Surviving are: one daughter-in-law, Nancy Foncannon of Marcellus; one granddaughter, Michelle Foncannon of Columbia, Md.; and several cousins. One son, Robert A. Foncannon, preceded him in death Sept. 7, 2008, and one brother, Howard F. Foncannon, also preceded him in death.
Cremation has taken place. Graveside military rites will be conducted at a later date. Memorials in memory of Gordon Foncannon may be directed to the Marcellus Fire and Ambulance Service, P. O. Box 367, Marcellus, MI 49067. Arrangements were handled by Mater Funeral Home, Marcellus.
