Edwardsburg edges Hopkins in season opener

HOPKINS — A 28-yard field goal in the second quarter proved to be the difference Friday night as visiting Edwardsburg edged perennial powerhouse Hopkins 10-7 in a non-conference contest.

Austin Spinnett, who ran for 67 yards on 14 carries, got the Eddies on the scoreboard in the opening quarter with a 1-yard run.

Jeff Roberson’s kick made it 7-0 heading into the second quarter.

Hopkins was able to knot the score at 7-7 with a 6-yard run, but Roberson’s field goal in the second quarter provided the final margin of victory.

Neither team was able to find the end zone in the final 24 minutes of the defensive struggle.

The Eddies (1-0) finished with 229 yards rushing, but did not complete either of their two passes on the night.

Hopkins (0-1) finished with 155 yards on the ground and 24 yards through the air.
