Henry J. Bartels, 82, of Vandalia died Sunday, July 25, 2010 at Hospice House, South Bend.

He was born March 8, 1928 in Calumet City, Ill. to the late Henry and Agnes (Wolff) Bartels.

He married Esther Federowski on June 13, 1953 in Chicago Heights, Ill. She survives.

Henry was a retired pipe fitter. He served in the Army during the Korean Conflict and was a member of the Chicago Heights VFW. He also served for many years as a volunteer firefighter on the Penn Township Fire Department.

He is also survived by two daughters, Jean Ann Bartels, of Vandalia and Mary Dutson, of Roseburg, Ore.; two sons, John Bartels and Lawrence Bartels, both of Vandalia; and one granddaughter, Amanda Bartels, of Vandalia.

Friends and family gathered Tuesday, July 27, 2010 at 6 p.m. The service was held at 7 p.m. at Connelly Funeral Home, 202 North Broadway St., Cassopolis. Father Donald G. Potts of Saint Ann Catholic Church, Cassopolis, officiated.

Military honors were provided by Efton James American Legion Post 206 and William E. Lozier VFW Post 10704, both of Cassopolis.
