Allegra Kandlstorfer, 94

Allegra Leone (Phillips) Kandlstorfer, 94, of Bertrand Road in Niles passed away at her home on Wednesday, July 21, 2010 with her family by her side.

Allegra was born on Feb. 16, 1916 to the late Amos and Carrie Mae (VanArsdall) Phillips in Shelbyville, Mich.

She married John N. Kandlstorfer in August 1946 in South Bend, Ind. Together they raised five children.

A homemaker most of her life, she worked for a few years at James Heddon and Sons in Dowagiac. Allegra also enjoyed gardening, watching mystery shows and reading detective magazines. She was an expert at newspaper crossword puzzles and enjoyed writing editorials for Voice of the People. Allegra and John also loved their time spent at the First Church of God in Niles and their friendships with those they worshiped with. Allegra also loved spending time with her family and was a wonderful mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and will be missed by all.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, John Kandlstorfer; and siblings, Iola Starrett, Doris Mattix, Kermit Phillips, Robert Phillips, Genieve VandenBerg, Faye Rock, Lavina Singleton and Arlene Northrop.

Allegra is survived by her two sons, John (Julie) Kandlstorfer, of Cassopolis, James (Connie) Kandlstorfer, of Cassopolis; daughters, Darlene (Glenn) Small, of Marcellus, Susan Brackett, of Niles, Vicki (Dennis) Drudge, of Elkhart, Ind.; 14 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and sister, Martha Ann Phillips, of Cassopolis.

A time of visitation will be held on Sunday, July 25, 2010 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Mission Hills Memorial Chapel located at 61453 M-51 North in Niles, where a service to honor Allegra’s long and wonderful life will be held on Monday, July 26, 2010 at 2 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made in Allegra’s name to Hospice at Home Inc. located at 4025 Health Park Lane, St. Joseph, MI 49085.
