‘Spelling Bee’ sets new higher standard for Beckwith Theatre

Currently playing at Beckwith Theatre is a wonderful musical/comedy, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. It is a quick-paced, laugh-out-loud funny play. Everything about this production is exceptional. The cast is terrific, each performance finely nuanced and broadly funny. The direction is tightly executed — there is not one false note in this play. The band is of professional quality. And the set, considering the cosy confines of the Beckwith, is spectacular.
In short, this play is a marvel. I have seen this play done in Chicago and New York, and this production does not pale by comparison. It has been my great honor to be involved with many fine plays at the Beckwith. I have seen remarkable things done there; we are certainly blessed to have this theater in our community. This production, however, sets a new standard for the Beckwith. This is a play not to be missed. There are four more more performances this weekend. I encourage all to do whatever it takes to attend one of those performances. This is the play this town will be talking about for years to come.
Congratulations to the cast, crew and director on their most entertaining achievement.
And, thank you to the Beckwith for having the courage to undertake such a production.
