Dowagiac decline estimated at 8.3 percent

Every July 1, the Census Bureau updates its population estimates for communities throughout the United States.

This year’s estimate for the City of Dowagiac shows a 1.4-percent decline in population.
In the nine years since the last census, the estimated decline in population is 8.3 percent.
If the census count accurately reflects the estimates, we are likely to have a population of about 5,635 in the city.

Population estimates are an important factor when state financial support calculations are made.

State-shared revenue is based on the actual census counts, not estimated figures, so this will not impact this year’s revenues.

However, it could impact us once the 2010 count takes effect.

Housing Commission capital improvement

Sandra Freeman, executive director of Dowagiac Housing Commission, has updated its five-year capital plan as required by HUD to remain eligible for capital funds through HUD.

Last week the city signed the appropriate support documentation so the Housing Commission can remain eligible for funding support for ongoing improvements.

The Housing Commission is to be commended for its efforts to address continued capital funding for its housing units in the City of Dowagiac.
