With their family and friends proudly looking on, seniors at Edwardsburg High School sat together inside the high school’s gymnasium, all together as a class for the last time this year.
A graduating class.
The commencement ceremony for the class of 2010 was in no shortage of memory or sentimentality or looks toward the future.
“I have waited for this day and I am sure all of you have as well,” said Valedictorian Cameron Breisch.
Breisch was just one of five student speakers during commencement including Salutatorian Sarah Baylor and co-valedictorians Brianna Fitzsimons, Kara Hodges and Ellen Miller.
Fitzsimons said memories were at the forefront of her mind as she prepared to address her peers, remembering themed basketball games and homecoming.
“It’s memories like these that we will look back on and smile about,” she said.
Sitting in wait of their diplomas, however, thoughts of the future are unavoidable.
“Our biggest challenges no longer entail deciding who to ask to the prom or how to figure out what the parents have planned for project graduation,” Fitzsimons said. “As (principal Don Quimby) likes to say, today is when our real lives begin.”
To mark that turning point, Superintendent Sherman Ostrander welcomed distinguished speaker, Michigan Senator of the 16th District Cameron Brown, who addressed the graduating class.
The Edwardsburg High School band opened the ceremony with a performance of “Solas Ane” by Samuel Hazo and the choir performed “Old Irish Blessing” by Denes Agay.
But even with all the pomp and all the circumstance, the moment seemed to belong to those ties that in some way will always bind the class of 2010.
“We really are an incredible group,” Breisch said. “Now, taking a moment to be serious, I want to encourage you all to be the best that you can be.
“We are a class of winners and we need to show it,” she said. “We must give our best efforts in everything we doso we can be an amazing class of famous people. If we want to succeed we must aim for the first place in everything we do. We are the next generation and we have the potential to shape the world.”
