Martin, Wright conference champs

PAW PAW – Lead by four-time champion Kaisha Martin, the Dowagiac girls’ team finished fourth at the Wolverine Conference Track & Field Championships on Wednesday night.
Martin, who was named co-Most Valuable Performer, won the 100- and 200-meters, the long jump and was a member of the winning 400-meter relay team.
Martin broke the school record in the long jump with a leap of 17-3.5. She ran 12.74 in the 100-meters and 25.99 in the 200-meters.
Martin joined with Jacoya Brookins, Cierra Mattix and Andrea Bradshaw in winning the 400-meter relay with a time of 52.32.
“Here MVP speaks for itself,” Dowagiac coach Ken Jordan said. “She certainly has been that all year for us.”
Three Rivers won the team championship with 106 points. Otsego was second with 99 points and Vicksburg third with 76 points. Dowagiac finished with 70 points.
The Chieftains also got a second place finish from Regina Kennedy in the discus as she recorded a toss of 97-3. She was fourth in the shot put with a throw of 31-0.5.
Bradshaw was fourth in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 17.52, while the Dowagiac 800-meter relay team of Andrea Wade, Bradshaw, Mattix and Brookins was fourth with a time of 1:53.89.
Mattix picked up a fourth place finish in the pole vault (8-0) and a seventh place finish in the 100-meters (13.98).
Kyle Wright captured the pole vault with a height of 12-6.
“He bounced back well from regionals,” Dowagiac coach Mike Stanger said. “We were very proud of his effort.”
The Chieftains also finished fifth and sixth in the vault as Bo Parsons cleared 11-6 and Colin Tidy cleared 11-0.
Troy Butcher was second in the 100-meters, while the Chieftains’ 400-meter relay team of Butcher, Jon Myers, Michael Bennett and Austin Adams was also second.
Butcher ran 11.31 in the 100 and the relay team posted a time of 44.55.
Adams was eighth in the 100-meters for the Chieftains with a time of 11.72.
Chris Gantt finished fourth in the 1,600-meters with a time of 4:40.21 and Dontel Highsmith fifth in the long jump with a distance of 19-11.75.
Pierre Reed was sixth in the 110-meter high hurdles with a clocking of 16.13.
Dowagiac’s 800-meter relay team of Myers, Highsmith, Parsons and Reed was sixth with a time of 1:35.46.
Myers was also seventh in the 200-meters (23.60) and Highsmith seventh in the high jump (5-6).
Mike Hemenway took eighth in the shot put with a toss of 41-5.5.
