CENTREVILLE – Lead by Division 3 District Golf Tournament medalist Chris Craft, the Dowagiac golf team captured the championship Thursday afternoon.
It was the first district championship for the Chieftain golf program.
Craft shot 74 to help Dowagiac to a team-best 320.
The Chieftains easily outdistanced runner-up Paw Paw, which shot 342. Schoolcraft was third with a 350 and Coloma fourth with a 354.
South Haven rounded out the top five with a 355.
After Craft’s 74, Dowagiac finished with a trio of 82s, shot by Max Howe, Cody Fairleigh and Jordan Juday.
Kyle Ward finished with an 86.
“He had a really great day,” Dowagiac coach Van Johnson said. “He basically stayed in the moment. He made a lot of pars. He had one eagle. He just played solid golf.
“The other kids played well. Looking at the scorecards you can see a dropped stroke here or there, but other than that nothing bad happened out there. The kids played really well.”
Dowagiac will now play in the regional tournament on Thursday, June 3 at Prairiewood in Otsego.
