Summer choir open to the public

BENTON HARBOR – Community members are invited to join Lake Michigan College’s Summer Choir directed by Rebecca Derbas-Selvidge.

Rehearsals will be every Tuesday from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., June 1 through Aug. 17, on the Napier Avenue Campus in the LMC Mendel Center Band Room (F125). Theme for this year’s program is “Opera.”

Participants will be performing such pieces as “Va Pensiero” from Verdi’s Nabucco, “Neighbor’s Chorus” from La jolie Parfumeuse by Offenbach, “He, watching over Israel” from Mendelssohn’s Elijah and “Ain’t It Awful the Heat?” from Kurt Weill’s Street Scene.

Selvidge has a degree in choral music education from Western Michigan University, where she was a member of the award-winning Gold Company and University Chorale.
She also holds a professional performance certificate of musical theater training from the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in New York City.
