To the editor:
Mike and Betty McCabe donated a railroad passenger bench to the historic Michigan Central Dowagiac Depot.
It was an item from their MCRR collection.
It was given to them when the New York Central transportation department started closing stations in about 1962.
It was well used when given to them and they have had it about 50 years.
It has traveled with them on their various railroad agreements from Detroit to New York City, Albany, N.Y., Philadelphia and back to Dowagiac when they retired to the family farm on Wilbur Hill Road.
Mike said, “It’s about time someone else enjoyed it.”
Keene’s auto repairĀ repainted it and delivered it in time for the third annual National Train Day celebration May 8 at the depot.
It will be a nice addition to the station.
Thanks to Mike, Betty and Keene’s auto repair for a great contribution to our depot.
Mike and Betty have donated several other items to The Museum at Southwestern Michigan College.
This donation has been in process for quite some time.
After discussing it with Mike, I put him in contact with Mr. Ron Leatz to follow through with the project.
