Niles finishes second at Mishawaka tourney

MISHAWAKA, Ind. – It was an up and down day for the Niles softball team on Saturday at the Mishawaka Cavemen Classic.

After Friday’s games were washed out by thunderstorms and heavy rains, the tournament was completed on Saturday.

Niles opened play Saturday morning with an upset 12-6 win over No. 9-ranked Mishawaka Marian.

Brooke Wilson picked up the victory for the Vikings as she went the distance, allowing six runs on five hits with three strikeouts.

Only one of Marian’s runs was earned.

Niles collected 17 hits in the contest, including two singles, a homerun and four RBIs from Sarah Cramer.

Niles’ Heather Daniels had four hits, while Ashley Evans singled, homered and drove in two runs.

Charissa Spear added a pair of hits for the Vikings, who also got a double and two RBIs from Brittney Buti and a single and three RBIs from Wilson.

Sophie Nielsen added a pair of hits.

Things did not go so well against perennial powerhouse Mishawaka, which defeated the Vikings 23-0 in five innings.

Shelbie Jones and Becca Hite combined on a no-hitter with seven strikeouts.

Daniels took the loss with relief help from Buti.

Niles wrapped up its day with a come-from-behind win over Elkhart Central. 10-9 to pick up the second place trophy.

Niles scored three times in the bottom of the seventh with the winning game-winning hit coming off the bat of Cramer, who finished with a single, a double and two RBIs.

Niles (7-14) had 18 hits in the contest, led by Spear with four hits and four RBIs. Daniels had a pair of doubles, while Buti doubled twice and drove in three runs.

Wilson also had two hits for the Vikings.

Wilson finished runner-up for the Most Valuable Player honor.
