When many people think of the Knights of Columbus, they think of their famous Tootsie Roll drive that raises money to benefit people with mental disabilities.

But on Saturday, the Catholic service organization will make another significant donation to the Niles community when it gives the Women’s Care Center $25,000 for a new ultrasound machine.

Malcolm Eblin, the district deputy of the Michigan Knights of Columbus Council 2113 out of Dowagiac, said the national organization has been targeting pregnancy care centers. This will be the fourth ultrasound machine to be donated to a care center in Michigan.

“The services (the Women’s Care Center) provides is incredible,” Eblin said. “Protection of the most vulnerable among humanity, the unborn, is at the core of what the Knights of Columbus responds to.”

Eblin hopes the charitable work of the Knights of Columbus will begin to put the Catholic Church in a more positive light.

“This is a great time for this story to come out with all the negative coverage of the Catholic Church in the media lately,” he said.
