In November 2004, Miller was about to die. His lungs had almost completely calcified into a cement-like condition due to a relatively rare lung disease called sarcoidosis.

Doctors in 2004 gave him no more than two years to live.

A husband and father of seven, this 50-year-old man was near the end of the line.
His only possibility of survival was a double-lung transplant.
