Will our taxes go down with landfill sale?

Dear editor:
The latest news of selling the landfill suggests that owner municipalities would receive about $30-$40 million dollars.
Everyone knows from the recent Indiana Toll Road sale that user prices will go up at the landfill despite claims of having to remain competitive. But, will our taxes go down with such a windfall of money? I was told unlikely not. Will spending increase — possibly wasteful? Most likely it will and some reasons for good and some not so good. However, the annual interest received from millions of dollars would surely allow the boards to reduce the millage rates they approve each year. Something as little as a simple 1 percent interest rate would return $300,000 annually, and $30 million in principle could command a much higher interest rate. Only Bertrand does not support the sale for obvious reasons and so why shouldn’t the rest of the “owners” enjoy in the profits too say those who want to sell.
I certainly could support the sale of the landfill but feel that sharing the profits should include the taxpayers in the form of lower property taxes as we the tax payer are also “owners” in the form of the owners’ owners who want to “share in the profits.”
