Car seat checks available May 8 in Buchanan

Community Outreach at Lakeland HealthCare and the Safe Kids chapter of Berrien County are teaming up with the Michigan State Police and the Berrien County Sheriff’s Department to offer a free child safety event on Saturday, May 8 at McCoy Creek Park, 401 West Chicago St. in Buchanan.
Car seat and booster seat safety checks will be provided from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Because four of out of five car seats checked nationally are used incorrectly or are unsafe, parents are encouraged to bring their children in their car seats or booster seats to have them checked by a certified child passenger safety specialist. Child passenger safety experts and law enforcement officials will be present to make sure the car seat or booster seat is properly installed in your vehicle, that it is the proper size for the child, and that the seat has not been recalled. Michigan law requires children to use a booster seat until they are 8 years old or 4 feet 9 inches tall, depending on which requirement they reach first.
