United Way moving forward with plan

The Board of Directors for the United Way of Greater Niles (UWGN) voted on Monday, March 29 to move forward with a plan that would create a single United Way for Berrien and Cass counties.

“A plan to create a strategic partnership between United Way of Greater Niles and United Way of Southwest Michigan was recently adopted,” said UWGN Board President, Jon Martin. The plan would significantly reduce overhead, bring much needed expertise to the greater Niles area, allow for an increase in programs, and reduce reporting burdens on partner agencies.

“The reality is that we’ve entered an age of working towards impact, of asking our agency partners to be accountable and work collaboratively, and consider the interests of their stakeholders and mission,” Martin said.  “We need to take our own advice. This decision can truly strengthen and enhance the services and support that the United Way offers in the 49120 area.

“The collaboration will allow for stronger experience around the annual campaign, streamlined requirements for agencies and most importantly more of our donors’ dollars will go toward providing service,” Martin explained.  “Since 2005, UWGN has operated with an overhead in excess of 27 percent.  The current economic conditions added urgency to the board’s decision.

“This was far from an easy decision and wasn’t decided overnight,” said Martin.  “We talked with a number of community leaders.  In Board meetings, we had asked tough questions and had some tough discussions.  It was the hardest decision the Board has had to face.  It resulted in sleepless nights for more than a couple of Board members. But in the end, it is the right decision, and it will allow us to fulfill the mission of our organization and provide better service for the citizens in 49120.”

United Way of Southwest Michigan President Anna Murphy is looking forward to the expanded partnership and the prospect of getting more dollars and services to the 49120 area.

“The Niles area has many committed leaders and volunteers,” Murphy said. “I really think that we can provide even more enhanced services to people who need help and make the donors’ gifts stretch farther to meet local needs.”

In this partnership, several current UWGN board members will have the opportunity to serve on a joint board of directors and be actively involved in funding decisions throughout Berrien and Cass counties.

“In addition,” added Murphy, “United Way of Southwest Michigan will be looking for citizens to serve on a variety of committees that help United Way focus on its goals to give, advocate and volunteer.
“This is a good partnership,” Martin said. “While the path was difficult at times, I think the end result will be better service to the community.”
