What do Cass County Commissioner David P. Taylor of Edwardsburg and Herbert J. Taylor, who wrote Rotary’s Four-Way Test, have in common?
The former is the nephew of the latter.
“He was the oldest brother of Dave Taylor’s father,” Dr. Fred L. Mathews informed Dowagiac Rotarians March 11.
Born in Pickford, Mich., in 1893, Herb Taylor was educated at Northwestern University and worked for the YMCA in France.
After marrying in 1919, Mr. Taylor moved to Oklahoma, returning to Chicago in 1925.
He served as president of the first Rotary Club in Chicago from 1939-40 and of Rotary International in 1954-55.
He died in 1978.
Mr. Taylor created the Four-Way Test in 1932 during the Depression.
He resigned from Jewel Tea, taking an 80-percent pay cut to become president of foundering Club Aluminum.
