The Stop In Family Restaurant on Barron Lake Road is closed – seized by the Michigan Department of Treasury, according to a notice posted on the front door of the business.

It’s uncertain exactly when the notice was posted or when the establishment was seized by the state as the treasury department is unable to comment on such matters according to public relations officer for the department Terry Stanton.

“Treasury staff can not confirm or discuss any action that the department might have taken,” Stanton told the Star.

He added there are two reasons in general the department may seize property and clarifying he was not discussing the restaurant in particular, said, “those two reasons would be some sort of basic tax liability to the state or state agency debt that an individual or business might owe to another state agency or department.

“Treasury,” he added, “often acts as a collection agent.”

It is unknown when or if the restaurant will reopen.
