“Drop! Drop! Drop!” students cheered as sixth grade teacher Mrs. Prestine dropped down a plastic football. The football made a “thwack” noise as it hit the floor. Suddenly yolk poured out of the football and everyone in the audience sighed as Mrs. Stepke yelled “No good!”
It was the night of the Brandywine Elementary Science Fair and Fine Arts Showcase. Several activities included the Dressed Egg Drop, Spanish, Art and Computer projects and activities, and other fun-filled attractions included were the Great Swami and Mystery Architecture.
Some special guests that came to the showcase were Brandywine Superintendent John Jarpe and Niles Public Library librarian Darlene Jackson.
Science fair judging was Tuesday to Wednesday. The judges were former teachers in the Brandywine community that most children knew. One of the judges was former art teacher Mrs. Maher, who taught kids in both Merritt and Brandywine elementaries.
That night, Mrs. Newman, a sixth grade teacher, announced the winners of the gold, silver and bronze medals. The gold winner was Kori Bunch, a sixth grade student in Mrs. Newman’s class with “Tame the Flame.”
The silver winner was Nathan Hechtl, a sixth grade student in Mrs. Prestine’s class, with “Heat Bounce.”
The bronze winners were Michael Stowe and Shawn Miller with “Comparing Sweetness.”
These winners were chosen out of about 300 projects.
This by far has been the best science fair Brandywine Elementary has ever had.
