Katie Johnson: Niles community grieves from news of double-murder

We sometimes take our lives for granted until others’ are taken from them.
The murders of Carolyn and John Tarwacki at their Carberry Road home were and still are shocking to the community as we try to fathom how two lives could be here one day and gone in a matter of minutes.
Since their deaths Feb. 5, law enforcement has been investigating who would have wanted these two reportedly model citizens to die.
The process is very intensive and requires interviews with many, many people. Police have narrowed down their list of potential suspects, but have yet to name a killer. They do not believe the murders where random, based on the manner in which they were killed and the circumstances in which they took place.
It is times like this that are the true test of how much you really want to be in journalism.
You hear a lot of things both on and “off” the record that you don’t often want to hear.
You listen to the grieving families and grisly details.
But it is a difficult time for many other people, too. The Michigan State Police and Cass County Sheriff’s Department responded to the call and have handled the investigation.
Halbritter Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Neighbors have been dealing with the fact a double-murder took place near their homes, and the killer has not been found. Former and current band students and staff remember the couple who shared their talents and caring personalities with them.
And of course, family and friends are grieving for John and Carolyn, who were married for only a couple years and enjoying life. The young couple probably thought they would spend many more years together.
During this time it is also important to remember that not everything you may hear around town about this incident may be true. Several rumors we have heard regarding the murders have been unfounded. Think about the source before spreading news to others.
Law enforcement is still investigating the incident, and they are the only ones who know most of the information. The rest is between John, Carolyn and the person or persons who took their lives.
